In 2002 excavation works has been nearly carried out in the underground coal store beneath the Salmisaari power plant in Helsinki.     At present coal for the plant is stored at ground level near the seashore at Ruoholahti,  a few kilometres from the centre of Helsinki, in an area with many office blocks.  On completion, the underground store will be able to hold 250,000 t of coal, freeing the cleared site for office buildings, marina and sports facilities.     The construction cost will be around 43 mil euros.     A total of 550 000 m3 of rock will be excavated.  In the same area an underground district cooling production and delivery plant connected to the combined heat and power plant (CHP) of Salmisaari is under construction.
